September is in the books, and our customers made their picks loud and clear. These were the five best-selling strains across all six High Desert Relief dispensaries last month, from our three Albuquerque stores on Alameda, Coors and Pan Am to our shops in Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Hobbs. All five are grown by our own team in our indoor hydroponic grow here in New Mexico, so the jar you buy came from plants we tended start to finish.
Here is a quick look at each one: where it comes from, what it smells and tastes like, and when people tend to reach for it.
1. Sour Diesel x Kush Mints
Type: Sativa-leaning hybrid (about 70% sativa) | Lineage: Sour Diesel x Kush Mints
September’s number one is a cross of two legends. Sour Diesel brings the unmistakable fuel-and-citrus nose that made it an East Coast classic, and Kush Mints adds a cool, minty sweetness on the back end. Crack the jar and you get diesel first, then a rush of mint. Customers describe the experience as an upbeat, euphoric start that settles into a calmer finish, which makes it a popular afternoon pick. It is also one of the most potent jars on our shelf, with THC that has tested into the 30s, so newer consumers should start low and go slow.

2. Louis XIII
Type: Indica (about 70% indica) | Lineage: Clone-only OG Kush phenotype
Known as “King Louis,” Louis XIII is a rare, clone-only cut of OG Kush that many growers consider one of the best OG phenotypes ever selected. The dense, emerald-green buds carry a classic OG profile of earth, pine and citrus, with a smooth, rich smoke. Its effects are usually described as deeply relaxing for the body with a quiet, settled head, so it is a go-to for evenings and the end of a long week. Terpenes like caryophyllene, humulene and linalool give it that woodsy, peppery depth.

3. Cap Junky
Type: Balanced hybrid (50/50) | Lineage: Alien Cookies x Kush Mints #11
Cap Junky, also called Miracle Mints, comes from a collaboration between two of today’s most respected breeders, Capulator and Seed Junky Genetics. Its buds are absolutely buried in trichomes, and the nose is sour fruit rind layered over pepper and gas. The smoke is peppery and very smooth. Customers tell us it hits big and lifts the mood, which makes it a favorite from late afternoon into the evening. It is consistently one of the strongest strains we grow.

4. Permanent Marker
Type: Indica-leaning hybrid (about 70% indica) | Lineage: Biscotti x Jealousy F2 x Sherb BX1
Leafly’s 2023 Strain of the Year, Permanent Marker was bred by Seed Junky Genetics and selected by Doja Pak. The name is not a gimmick: the chunky, resinous buds really do smell like a fresh pack of markers, with earthy and citrus notes underneath. Expect a heavy, relaxing body feel and a calm, still head. It is one of the most talked-about strains in the country right now, and New Mexico shoppers clearly agree.

5. Skywalker OG Kush
Type: Indica (about 85% indica) | Lineage: Skywalker x OG Kush
Rounding out the list is Skywalker OG Kush, often just called Skywalker, a cross of two well-known indica lines. Its dense, evergreen buds are laced with fiery orange pistils and a thick coat of trichomes. The aroma blends earth, pine and citrus with diesel, spice and skunk underneath, plus a rare touch of terpinolene. It is a classic heavy indica that people tend to save for evening and nighttime.

What September’s top sellers tell us
Four of the five top sellers lean OG or Kush Mints in their family tree, and three of them are indica or indica-leaning. New Mexico shoppers in September were clearly reaching for rich, gassy, high-potency flower with a relaxing finish, with Sour Diesel x Kush Mints as the energetic exception at the top of the list.
