Edibles dosage chart: THC in milligrams.
How many milligrams of THC to take, how long edibles take to kick in, and answers to the questions our budtenders hear most at our Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Hobbs dispensaries.
● Dosage chart
Find your starting dose.
Every edible package lists milligrams (mg) of THC per piece. That number, not the size of the gummy or the square of chocolate, is what to watch. Start at the low end of a range and work up on another day.
1-2.5mg
Microdose
A light lift. Good for a first try, a new product, or staying clear-headed.
2.5-5mg
Light
You'll feel it. Mild relief and a mood lift, and most people can go about their evening.
5-10mg
Standard
A full dose and the usual single serving on a package. Plan on staying in.
10-20mg+
High tolerance
For experienced consumers and medical patients working with a provider.
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Most edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, and the effects can last 6 hours or more. Your body digests the THC and your liver turns it into a form that tends to feel stronger and last longer than smoking.
Why do edibles feel stronger than smoking?
When you smoke or vape, THC goes from your lungs to your bloodstream within minutes. When you eat it, your liver converts THC to 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent and lasts longer. That is why the same number of milligrams can feel very different from a joint. Read more in Safely Eating Cannabis Products.
Gummies, chocolate, drinks and tinctures: does the type matter?
The milligrams matter most, but the format changes the timing. Drinks and fast-acting gummies often kick in sooner, sometimes within 15 to 30 minutes. Chocolate and baked goods with more fat can take longer. Tinctures held under the tongue absorb faster than ones you swallow.
What if I took too much?
Stay calm. The feeling is temporary and will pass. Find a quiet, comfortable place, drink water, eat something, and rest. Do not drive. If you feel unwell or need help, call the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center at 1 (800) 222-1222, or 911 in an emergency. See Potential Side Effects of Cannabis for more.
Should medical patients dose differently?
Medical patients often need steadier, longer relief, and some work up to higher doses with their provider. Tell your doctor about any other medications you take, since cannabis can interact with them. Our Cannabis Dosage guide covers inhaled cannabis and edibles side by side.
