It is one of the most common questions our budtenders hear: do you chew a THC gummy, swallow it whole or let it melt in your mouth? The short answer is that all three work. The way you eat it mostly changes how quickly you feel it, not whether you feel it.
Chewing: the reliable default
Chewing a gummy breaks it into small pieces, so it digests evenly and the THC is absorbed the same way every time. That consistency is the main reason we suggest it, especially if you are still figuring out your dose. Most people feel a chewed gummy in about 30 minutes to 2 hours, with the effects peaking a couple of hours in.
Swallowing it whole
Swallowing a gummy without chewing is fine and it will still work. A whole gummy can take a little longer to break down, so the effects may arrive later. That delay is where people get into trouble: they assume it is not working and take another one. If you swallow your edibles whole, give it a full two hours before you decide you need more.
Letting it dissolve
Holding a gummy in your mouth until it dissolves lets a small amount of THC absorb through the tissue in your cheeks and under your tongue. Some people notice a slightly quicker start this way, but most of the THC is still swallowed and digested. Products made for fast onset, like tinctures and some infused drinks, are built to take advantage of that route more than a standard gummy is.
What matters more than how you eat it
- Start low. If you are new to edibles, 2.5 to 5mg of THC is a comfortable place to start. Our edibles dosage chart walks through what each milligram range usually feels like.
- Wait before you take more. Two hours is the rule of thumb, longer on a full stomach.
- Food changes the timing. An edible on an empty stomach often kicks in sooner. One after a big meal can take longer, and some people find it lasts longer too.
- Pick one way and stick with it. Eating your gummies the same way each time makes your experience much easier to predict.
