New Mexico Cannabis Sales Hit a Monthly Record in July

New Mexico’s legal cannabis market just posted its best month yet. According to reporting from The Marijuana Herald on data released by the New Mexico Cannabis Control Division, licensed retailers statewide sold nearly $50 million worth of product in July, including a new monthly record for adult-use sales. Combined medical and adult-use sales for 2026 have now reached roughly $335 million, part of an all-time market total north of $2.4 billion since legal sales began.

The numbers reflect how far New Mexico cannabis has come in a short time. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Cannabis Regulation Act in April 2021, personal possession and cultivation became legal that June, and the state’s first licensed adult-use stores opened their doors in April 2022. A little over four years later, retailers across the state processed more than 1.25 million transactions in July alone.

For shoppers, the record month is a good excuse to brush up on the rules. Adults 21 and older can possess up to two ounces of flower, 16 grams of concentrate, and edibles containing up to 800 milligrams of THC while out in public; at home, storage is unlimited as long as it’s kept out of public view. Adult-use purchases carry a statewide cannabis excise tax, which ticked up from 13% to 14% on July 1, on top of local gross receipts tax. Medical cannabis purchases are exempt from the excise tax, one more reason it’s worth knowing whether you qualify for New Mexico’s medical cannabis program if you’re a regular shopper.
